Lyrics and Stories by John Kirlin

  • May the stars look down upon my horses, because I know tomorrow’s on its way.

I write you this letter by the campfire and I hope that it finds you someday.

It's hard to be in love with an outlaw, alway living life on the run.

Times, they get hard and you get lonely, but darling, don’t you worry your day will come.

I’m heading down south to cross the border. Pinkertons are riding fast on my tracks.

I will always remember our times in Lander, and I’m hoping to one day go back.

‘Cause it's hard to be in love with an outlaw, alway living life on the run.

Times, they get hard and you get lonely, but darling, don’t you worry your day will come.

  • Verse 1

I’m running for my guns today, the law is at my back.

They heard what I’d done today, there ain’t no turning back.

I am surely going to hang if they catch up to me,

But more blood is on its way.

I took a man’s life today as he begged upon his knees.

He asked if he could stay, crying “please, mister please!”

But I gave him no sympathy for the damage that he’d done.

So just like that I pulled out my new gun.

    Chorus

The bullets are gonna fly tonight, just me against the law.

With no one to defend my right for what I’d plainly saw.

He took my baby girl today, for that he had to pay.

But my time draws near as the gun smoke clears.

    Verse 2

It was dark when I got out of bed and something wasn’t right.

The voice inside my head said “turn on the light!”

That's when I saw him standing there with blood upon his skin.

A pain struck deep and filled me from within.

I ran into the other room to see where she would lay.

I stumbled up to her bed and saw where she was slain.

He took my entire world from me and a fire had lit my eye

I decided then that he was going to die!

    Chorus

The bullets are gonna fly tonight, just me against the law.

With no one to defend my right for what I’d plainly saw.

He took my baby girl today, for that he had to pay.

But my time draws near as the gun smoke clears.

    Verse 3

I’ve got my guns in my hand and I’m ready for a fight.

I took over the saloon to hole up for the night.

Time seems to move so slow as I wait impatiently,

So to calm my nerves I reach for the whiskey.

I poured myself half a glass and then one half more.

Thats when I glanced at the mirror and saw them at the door.

As I turned they reached for their guns and dove for the floor.

So I took my drink and then we were at war.

    Chorus

The bullets are gonna fly tonight, just me against the law.

With no one to defend my right for what I’d plainly saw.

He took my baby girl today, for that he had to pay.

But my time draws near as the gun smoke clears.

  • Verse 1:

I woke up late this morning. I opened up my eyes.

The sun was bright this morning as it lit up all the sky.

You look so calm as you lay there, as you lay there in my bed.

I wonder all the dreams that might be going through your head.

Will you wake up with a smile girl, as I serve you this breakfast in bed?

    Verse 2:

Now we’ve got things to do now. Will there be enough time,

To go into this world just to hurry up and stand in line.

Now we can make, make our own plans. No need to do what they say.

We can climb the tallest mountain, or buy a boat and sail away.

Will you stay there by my side girl, once we finish this breakfast in bed.

  • Verse 1

I’ve been broken, yes I’ve been run down.

I’ve been to hell and back,

looking for answers but there's no cure for that.

I’ve got a feeling that I need some healing

It’s been a long hard day,

and I need something to wash my pain away.

    Verse 2

Now I’ve got my problems, yes I’ve been dead wrong.

    Been down this road before,

Looking for a place that I can call my own.

But you don’t need me, and I just can’t seem

To get you out of my mind,

so I’m gonna grab this bottle for the very last time.

  • Verse 1:

I see you in my dreams everytime I close my eyes, it's nothing but you and me

But I walk these empty streets, looking for those bright blue skies and hoping that we’d someday meet

I often sit and wonder, will time stop on that day.

    Verse 2:

Now everything seems gray, nothing ever stands out. I wish I could just walk away.

But something tells me to stay, something saying have no doubt, it’ll be a brighter world someday

And to these words I listen and dream of that perfect place.

    Verse 3:

Now all the flowers are in bloom. I have never seen such life, even in the month of June

And I pray you’ll be here soon, Cause I’m holding on to this new light, and saving it for me and you.

Will you stay there by my side at the end of this perfect day?

  • Verse 1:

You are, you are the one who left me standing alone with that gun

Now I am, I am the one whos forced to live this life on the run

And we can’t, we can’t go back to the way things once were, we can’t live like that

I once was an honest man, but that was before you put this gun in my hands

    Chorus:

Because of you I’m on the run, We had nothing left so you told me to grab that gun

Because of you I took an honest life, you said we’d be alright once I rob that bank tonight

    Because of you

    Verse 2:

Now times were, they were getting rough. We were out of money and down on our luck

And things seemed to be getting worse. Why did this happen, it feels like a curse.

Then you said you would one day leave, that you could not live without that money

So I begged, I begged you to stay but for you to have me there was only one way.

    Chorus:

Because of you I’m on the run, We had nothing left so you told me to grab that gun

Because of you I took an honest life, you said we’d be alright once I rob that bank tonight

    Because of you

  • Verse 1:

I’ve been driving all night, just me and the pale moonlight

thinking about me and you, and all those things that we should do

    yeah me and you

Yes, everything is gonna be alright, just as soon as that sun will rise

This will be your last night alone, cause darling I’m coming home to you

    Chorus:

I’m coming home, I’m coming home, I’m coming home

    Verse 2:

Yeah, I’ve been gone a long time, its been so long it feels like a crime

I still remember that day, they came to our door and took me away from you

    Away from you.

Last time I saw that place, the tears rolled down the side of your face

it hurt so much to go, but you'll be happy to know that I’m coming home

    Chorus:

I’m coming home, I’m coming home, I’m coming home

    Bridge:

We can pick up where we left off that day, right by your side I’ll be here to stay

    I’m coming home

  • Chorus:

I’m leaving town on a railroad track, I’ve packed my bags, there ain’t no looking back.

Where I’m heading it must be a dream, Lord I’m moving to Wyoming.

    Verse 1:

I’ve had my share of this city. I’m growing weary and its plain to see.

I’ll ask you once if you’ll come with me, Lord I’m moving to Wyoming.

I dream of a place where I can be free, a place where my neighbors will just let me be.

If anyone calls, I’ve headed out west. Lord I’m moving to Wyoming.

I’m leaving town on a railroad track, I’ve packed my bags, there ain’t no looking back.

Where I’m heading it must be a dream, Lord I’m moving to Wyoming.

    Whoa, Whoa

Whoa the mountain’s on fire, I don't think those flames can get much higher

Whoa the mountain’s on fire, now our situation is getting dire, Whoa

All we can do is sit and drink, watch the mountain burn down to nothing

We’ll have a party and forget our fears, wash away our worries by drinking more beers

Whoa the mountain’s on fire, now our situation is getting dire, Whoa

Watch the flames and embers light the sky, pray the Lord’s creatures escape with their lives

Smell the smokey air saturate the town, fire engine lights spinning round and round

Whoa the mountain’s on fire, I don't think those flames can get much higher

Whoa the mountain’s on fire, now our situation is getting dire, Whoa

  • Verse 1:

I went down to the crossroads. Ran into a southern gent’. Little did I know that my soul would be spent

So I sit here drinking at the Purgatory Bar. Man what was I thinking, did I go to far?

    Verse 2:

So the bartender asked me if I’d led a good life. Did I have any children or leave behind a wife?

So I told him my story. I was just a simple boy. Out looking for glory and something to enjoy.

    Verse 3:

In walked a tall man. His eyes were pale and white. He said he had a fast hand and would win this fight.

So I went for my pistol, but he had a faster draw. Then he took over my soul. That's the last thing I saw

  • Verse 1:

Where can we go at night when stars do not shine? Where can we turn in life when we run out of time?

And where can we go when we run out of hope? What will become of us when we grow from young into old?

    Verse 2:

Everyday we must ask the questions about our own lives. Will anyone answer them and will they be right?

Do we trust our instincts, do we leave it to fate? How are we to know if we’re too late?

Time doesn’t stop for us so why should we wait?

    Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa

    Verse 1:

I was just a boy when I first killed a man, with a bottle of bourbon and a gun in my hand.

He looked at me as I filled him with lead and before he died he reached up and said

The bottle it leads to nothing but sin as the fire burns deep from within

    Verse 2:

Then one morning came that I soon won't forget when I first got the feeling that I just could not quit.

People they a came from miles around to see the man who held the fastest gun in the town.

He said that I’d killed his dear old granddad and in this saloon his justice would be had.

He set the room a blaze just like the old man said, the fire had come to claim me for the dead

    Chorus:

I said fire, fire, what will you burn tonight? I said fire, fire, what will you burn tonight?

I said fire, fire, what will you burn tonight? I said fire, fire, what will you burn tonight?

I said fire, fire, what will you burn tonight? I said fire, fire, what will you burn tonight?

  • Verse 1:

You said you’re leaving, and I’m hardly breathing.

This love we shared is falling apart into thin air.

Losing you is more than I can plainly bare.

    Chorus:

So come on home now girl.

You know I’m not strong enough to do this,

to do this on my own.

    more than you could know.

    Verse 2:

So now that I’m sober, why is this still over?

This pain is deep. Thinking of you, I can hardly sleep.

I’m tossing and turning, constantly yearning

To have you there, running my fingers through your hair.

    Chorus:

So come on home now girl.

You know I’m not strong enough to do this,

to do this on my own.

And I need you in my world,

When times get hard I’ll know you’re there and I need you

    More than you could know.

    Verse 3:

Now yesterday’s problems, I have not forgot them.

The things you said are running in circles through my head.

You said I’ve got issues, that soon I would miss you.

Now you’re walking away, I just wish you would hear me say…

    Chorus:

So come on home now girl.

You know I’m not strong enough to do this,

to do this on my own.

And I need you in my world,

When times get hard I’ll know you’re there and I need you

    More than you could know.

Whiskey river take me home, to where I want to stay.

Stopping down at hanks place to pick up some flies, then I’m leaving town

Grab another bottle of Jim Beam, I’ll be sleeping by the river tonight

    Chorus:

Drinking whiskey down by the river, on a Saturday

Whiskey River take me home, to where I want to stay
